Graphic Design and Digital Tools: Type, Sign, Symbol

This project demonstrates the way I was able to use Adobe Illustrator to create icons inspired by the boldness and thickness that can be seen within the Futura font.

Since the basis of this assignment revolved around creating icons that matched the style of my chosen font, Futura, when deciding which type of icons I wanted to create, I had to make sure the icons would follow a simplistic nature. Given that the Futura font features a kind of boldness and thickness aspect, adding too much detail to the icon would have made it harder to make out because then the details would have also had to follow this same boldness and thickness aspect. Additionally, on top of that, the Futura font alone is already a very simplistic and minimalistic font. Therefore, when making these kinds of icons, they also had to be sure to follow a similar format.

The Futura font is also highly geometric — meaning that its elements are based on simple geometric shapes like circles, triangles, and rectangles. Thus, the font features clean and precise proportions that allow it to be an extremely symmetrical typeface. With all of this in mind for the creation of my icons, one thing I had to focus on was the icon's proportions and make sure all the lines were clean and proportionate not just to each other but also to the text written next to it as well.
